What do you do when the life you want requires a version of you that does not exist yet? At thirteen, Steve Featherstone worked out that the British Army does most of its fighting at night, and that he could not turn his own bedroom light off. On this episode of BEYOND with Aleksandra King, the British Army veteran of forty years explains what he did about it. He started walking through graveyards after dark on his paper round, over and over, until the fear turned into excitement. He enlisted at sixteen, served with the Corps of Royal Engineers and later as a Sergeant Major, and now swims and dives in pitch darkness because it brings him peace. Aleksandra presses him on why the fear waiting inside the uniform was not bullets but standing up to speak, and on how four decades of being marked down in front of his peers turned criticism into something he calls liberating.
